This collection contains a ledger with a handwritten copy of 19th Century court records for Athens, Georgia. The records were copied by Melba Bedgood in 1959. The first section is labeled Book A: Marriage Records for 1805-1814. The second section contains Land Court records for headrights 1803-1833. An index of names is included in the front of the ledger. Loose papers laid in the front of the ledger include typed information regarding a Baptist church in Athens; Clarke County Will Book C for 1842-1859; General Wiliam M. Browne; and a genealogy of the Williams and O'Kelley families.

This collection consists of correspondence, photograph cards, a journal, and a muster roll of Captain Stanley's Troup Artillery for November and December 1861. The correspondence is mainly between Stanley and his wife Julia. He writes from Camp Lawton (Savannah) in 1861 and then from Tallahassee and Quincy, Florida. The journal includes entries from Benjamin Henry Pope in 1862 as he serves in Company K, 9th Mississippi Infantry, and provides details of battles in the Glasgow/Cave City/Munfordville, Kentucky area. The photographs are of Marcellus Stanley, Alexander Franklin Pope, and G. T. Beauregard.

University history is recorded in newspaper articles and some letters and Georgia history in speeches, newspaper articles, and brochures. Athens Historical Society (AHS) history is recorded in minutes, newsletters, correspondence, and speeches. AHS internal papers include directories, membership rolls, Constitution and by-laws, rosters, news releases, and a paper entitled The First Twenty Years: A Brief History of the Athens Historical Society. The collection also has the papers, scripts, and newspaper clippings concerning the AHS produced video The Presence of the Past: Historic Houses of Athens, Georgia. See also the typescripts of the full soundtrack of the video Reminiscences of Old Athens. Later additions to the collection include financial papers, Athens Historical Society Papers Volume II, and material regarding the "Vanishing Athens" project, Crampton's Gap project, Clarke County Cemeteries project, and Ellis Merton Coulter birthday commemoration.
